What are the turning methods of titanium alloy in mechanical

Titanium alloy is a new type of metal developed in recent years, which is widely used in various industries. Because of its low thermal conductivity and high cutting temperature, it is twice as high as cutting 45 steel under the same cutting parameters.







At the same time, the affinity of titanium alloy is great. At high cutting temperature, titanium chips and the cut surface are easy to produce serious sticking phenomenon on the tool material occlusion surface, which is considered to be a kind of difficult cutting material second only to superalloy. Now let's introduce how to turn titanium alloy in detail.


1. Titanium Alloy Cutting Tools

YG cemented carbide with high thermal conductivity, good flexural strength, small grain size and low affinity with titanium should be selected for turning titanium alloy. In addition to ordinary high speed steel, high vanadium high speed steel, cobalt high speed steel and aluminum high speed steel should be selected for improving tool durability. Diamond or synthetic polycrystalline diamond and cubic boron nitride can also be used as tool materials to turn titanium alloy.

According to the performance and cutting characteristics of titanium alloy, the geometric parameters of turning titanium alloy tools should be considered from improving heat dissipation conditions, increasing edge strength, and reducing cold hardening and sticking phenomena.


2. Accuracy, Conditions and Correct Cutting Parameters

 

 
The accuracy of tool runout in both axial and radial direction is also important. For example, if the blade is not properly installed in the milling cutter, the cutting edge around the milling cutter will be quickly damaged. In cutting titanium metal, other factors, such as poor tolerance of tool manufacturing, wear and damage of tool, defective or poor quality of tool handle, wear of machine tool spindle and so on, will greatly affect tool life.


Although most people prefer to use positive rake groove cutters, in fact, the tool with slightly negative rake groove can remove materials with higher feed, and the feed per tooth can reach 0.5mm. But at the same time, it also means that the best stability must be maintained, that is, the machine tool should be very strong, and the clamping should be extremely stable.


3. Cutting parameters


Too high or too low cutting temperature in cutting titanium alloy will reduce tool durability. Therefore, the corresponding cutting speed of optimum cutting temperature should be chosen. The optimum cutting temperature for cutting titanium alloy with high speed steel tool is (480 - 540). The optimum cutting temperature for cutting titanium alloy with cemented carbide tool is (650 - 750)%. Generally speaking, the cutting speed of HSS tool is (8-12) m/min; the dry cutting speed of Synthetic Polycrystalline Diamond tool is 100 m/min, and the wet cutting speed is 200 m/min. When the hardness and cutting depth of the workpiece material are large, the cutting speed should be relatively small.

 
 
4. Cutting fluid

When turning titanium alloy, emulsifier with good cooling effect or water solution with extreme pressure additives should be used. One is to reduce cutting temperature, the other is to prevent combustion of titanium alloy powder in micro turning.
